Everybody loves a great story. And that is what Conor McPherson’s award winning, Broadway hit The Weir is all about. Valerie, a Dublin transplant to a remote Irish town, finds herself in a local bar with the pub regulars. These regulars, five bachelors, vie for her attention by spinning ‘ghostly’ yarns of local legend—including the haunting of the house she has just bought. But in the end, it is Valerie who tells the most haunting of tales. This deceptively simple and soft-spoken work is like ‘the weir’ of its title—on one side, still beauty and lyrical loveliness, but on the other, it is a forceful torrent seeking frightening release. The winner of two 1998 Olivier Awards, including Best Play
