Play Guidelines

The purpose of Heller Shorts is to provide a venue for the development of local plays and playwrights, and to encourage the growth of local directors.

SUBMISSION GUIDLINES:
1. A playwright may submit a maximum of two original on-act plays, each 15 minutes or less in length.
2. Plays must be new or not yet produced in Tulsa, and be plays to which the playwright(s) alone have rights.
3. Large cast plays are discouraged.
4. Plays must be submitted with a title page containing the title ONLY. Contact information is to be provided on the submission cover sheet.
5. E-mail submissions are preferred. Plays may be submitted by e-mail to HellerShorts@gmail.com
6. All scripts must incorporate a pair on shorts into the story.
7. If submitted by e-mail, submissions must include all information requested for a submission cover sheet.
8. A script may be entered only once.
9. Only scripts from the local Green Country, Oklahoma area will be considered.

JUDGING
1. Plays that do not meet submission guidelines will not be consided.
2. All plays must use the theme/prop for the year.
3. A panel of five judges will read submissions and rate on a scale of 1-5. The top ranked six to eight plays will be selected for production.
4. No more than two plays per playwright may be produced each year.
5. All playwright information is to be contained on the submission cover sheet ONLY. Plays will be given a number and cover sheets will be separated from the plays. The Submission Coordinator will be the only person to process submissions. Judges will not be given any information on the playwrights.

TECHNICAL PRODUCTION
1. Plays are intended to be produced with minimal lighting, props and sound. Any special requirements are to be outlined on the title page.
2. All props beyond the one chosen as the “theme” of the festival must be provided by the playwright, director or actor(s), and must be carried on/off in 15 seconds.
3. The Festival Committee will match directors with scripts. If the playwright has a specific director in mind, they are welcome to submit them for consideration.
4. Heller Theatre will provide sound, lighting, stage and house management, box office, publicity, and a location for auditions.
5. Rehearsals prior to production week are to be arranged by each playwright/director at locations of their choosing.
6. A playwright may direct her/his own play.
7. A play may not be pulled from the production without the written consent of the Heller Theatre Council.
8. All playwrights, directors and actors will be contributing their services at no charge to Heller Theatre.

Heller Theatre is a member of the Oklahoma Community Theatre Association and the Tulsa Area Community Theatre Alliance

Heller Theatre is part of the Park and Recreation Department of the City of Tulsa. Heller has been producing contemporary plays since 1981. The same three member staff, Julie Tattershall, Frank Gallagher and Erin Scarberry operates and manages both Clark Theatre and Heller Theatre.
